tyler gilmore - composer
07.23.08 | Awarded the 2008 ASCAP/Columbia College Chicago "In honor of Hank Jones" Emerging Composer Commission! Also the longest commission title in history. I better start writing...
07.07.08 | 5 Star Review in CMB Big band swing this ain't. In fact, using the term a "jazz orchestra" in conjunction with the 17-piece personnel of the 9th & Lincoln Orchestra (monikered after the address of ephemeral Denver jazz club Dazzle) is a heavy misnomer. The group's musical stylings often have more in common with Icelandic ambients Sigur Ros than say, Woody Herman - a statement ratified by the inclusion of an arrangement of Bjork's "Aeroplane" on this, 9th & Lincoln's latest, self-titled release. While something like this might have worried me previously, the verve of the Bjork arrangement sent all my presuppositions flying, as did the rest of the CD. Exploring the deepest of harmonic depths opened up by the freedom of jazz-based themes, bandleader Tyler Gilmore steers the ensemble through a lush musical ocean like a modern-day Gil Evans, burgeoned by vigorous winds of acid, fusion, and even electronica. Beyond the Bjork track, the CD is entirely original, and works itself to the bone finding the balance between unpredictability and familiarity. Overall, Ninth & Lincoln is the knockout soundtrack to the futuristic Neo-Noir masterpiece you always wanted see - just less the black and white. And that's a good thing.

06.17.08 | Ninth+Lincoln CD Reviewed in Downbeat We have been fortunate enough to grace the pages of the world's top jazz publication. 3.5 stars ain't to bad for our first recording! Its in the June 2008 issue, which is only on stands for a bit longer so check it out if you can.
And in other news, I just got back of the 2nd Jazz Composers Symposium, held at USF in Tampa Florida by Chuck Owen. Jim Mcneely, Stefon Harris, and Bill Hollman were present. It was highly educational and fun, and has lead me into what will be a furious study of counterpoint.
I'm currently working on a commission for the Univ. of Northern Colorado Symphonic Band under the direction of Dr. Richard Mayne. At this point its just shapes and textures finding their way to my spinal chord, but hopefully soon it will begin to materialize on paper.
04.06.08 | A nice write-up in today's Denver Post! I'm gonna go easy on American journalism for a while, presidential horse-race be damned...

A burst of fine new releases

"Suddenly there's a glut of tremendous material after a pretty sleepy winter on the new jazz-release front. Leading off with some locally grown music and then straight to space, this music swings and kicks in unlimited ways:
The self-titled first disc from Ninth and Lincoln (Dazzle Records) has a vast, ambitious sound that must conjure up the open spaces composer/leader Tyler Gilmore grew up with in rural Wyoming. You can practically hear the currents blasting through the Wind River Canyon near his hometown of Riverton, and the expansive, rockish arrangements really bring something new to big-band charts.
It doesn't hurt that Gilmore has recruited local leaders to explore the music, including vibraphonist Greg Harris, trumpeter Brad Goode and saxophonist Peter Sommer. It's nice to hear such rejuvenating orchestral arrangements on a local level, and here's hoping Ninth and Lincoln sells, oh, 10,000 of these. And thanks to Dazzle, a veritable oasis of a club for national touring artists, for initiating its own label. May it continue to showcase deserving local talent."
Thanks Bret! Thanks band! Now...how do we sell all these cd's?!
03.11.08 | Lutoslawski's "Funeral Music" Go listen to this piece...do it now.
02.04.08 | I won an ASCAP Young Jazz Composer's Award! Hoo-haa! I'm very excited to have finally gotten my name on this list. And in incredible company: the amazing Le Boeuf brothers, Alex Hietlinger, Kendrick Scott, the absolutely killing Jaleel Shaw, fellow Coloradoan Ben Markley, and a number of others.
I sent them "Your Cent" I think, a rather centrist choice that seems to have paid off. Thanks ASCAP!
In other news, ninth+lincoln is doing a show with John Fedchock on the 24th of February. Check it out!
I'm starting a new piece, involving melodic and mathematical systems. But it won't be nearly as boring as that makes it sound.
I'm very in love with the music of John Shannon. Google him. Also, I just bought Madlib's "Madvilliany", which is very cool.
01.14.08 | New CD and more... Whilst I'm rather taken by the glorious primary season that ebbs and flows at the first 5minutes of every public radio hour, there is still much going on with me and ninth+lincoln.
Please check out our new CD! I'll be slowly but surely be working on promo of the disc, sending it out to reviewers and radio stations. In the meantime, please do spread the word if you've heard it and like it. We are essentially a one man operation that expands to 18 once a month, and therefore its going to take some help to make this thing heard.
I'm very happy with the outcome. I can honestly say that we've come up with a jazz big band sound wholly its own. We've not settled on any certain aesthetic, we but the recording turned out to be a good stop in the road. Also, the many soloists really laid down some special sounds.
So, please to the 9thandlincoln.com or CDBaby.com to pick up a copy of the disc.
Since the release of the disc, I've come out wit two new pieces. The first, "Bustle Outside the Window", is a schizophrenic medium tempo thing with the mellow battling the hyper-active. I'm very happy with it, and have just a few edits left before its done-ish.
The second is "Staircase", commission by Art Bouton of the Univ. of Denver. Its original version is for brass quintet and solo soprano saxophone. While the harmony and rhythm are not particularly suprising, the form and texture both represent new territory for me. Its definitely a wandering piece, with very little resolution, but (hopefully) a sense of movement and urgency. I just yesterday finished scoring it for big band as well. At many points it seemed like a square peg in a round hole to do so, but in the end we can hope it may be cool. It should be premiered on this month's ninth+lincoln show, January 27th 7pm @ Dazzle. The big band version ended up working very nicely in terms of orchestration(i think), but attaching meaningful rhythm section parts to a piece of music that has none and was meant to have none was quite challenging. My success in this has yet to be determined.
Next up: And arrangement of "Giving Full Account" for Gary Mayne's Lewis Palmer Middle School Band. Next, will be an arrangement of a Fred Hess peice for our upcoming recording project with him, featuring some amazing guests such as Matt Wilson. After this, I will be writing something for the Univ. of Northern Colorado Symphonic Band. This piece will be commissioned by Dr. Richard Mayne. Finally, I will continue writing for a second Ninth+lincoln CD; an endeavor I salivate over daily.
Please be in touch people. Email me, myspace me, facebook me, talk to me...
12.12.07 | 9th+lincoln just got a very nice Westword Feature! Please go check out the article. Thanks to Jon Solomon for taking the time!
'Gilmore takes cues from John Hollenbeck, one of his primary influences, and tends to shy away from dedicated melodies in favor of focusing more on the rhythm section. Elsewhere, the disc features Wil Swindler's arrangement of Björk's "Aeroplane," which the group played last year at Dazzle during a night centered around the Icelandic diva's enigmatic music. The selection itself is a great example of Gilmore's desire to incorporate his broader sensibilities into a jazz framework.
"We're trying to get a lot of sounds that big bands aren't supposed to get, necessarily, or don't usually get," Gilmore points out.'
